Apple iPhone 7 to launch in India for Rs 60,000 in October

As Apple has unmasked the iPhone 7, many out here are wondering when the hallowed device will launch in India. Sources in the Indian supply chain exclusively tell Gizmodo India that the launch could happen in October.

Sources claim that Apple wants to get in on the Diwali rush. Apple is said to be aggressively marketing the device and will price it much lower than what the iPhone 6S launched for in India last year.


Update: Apple has officially confirmed that it is launching the iPhone 7 in India on October 7 alongside the Apple Watch series 2.

The company is looking to cash in on the Diwali shopping rush. Diwali is on October 30 and in the lead up to the festival of lights, the company wants to cash in on the rush.

Update 2: The phone will have a starting price of Rs 60,000 which will be for the 32GB iPhone 7 model. The AirPod earphones will launch for Rs 15,400.

Previously, Apple had priced the 64GB model of the iPhone 6S for Rs 72,000 during launch.

Sources have also revealed that Apple has been actively courting enterprise customers for the iPhone 7 as it wants to ramp up its sales in India. It realises with the premium attached to the device if it has to attain any kind of critical mass in relation to shipments, it will come through its cash rich enterprise partners.

For the enterprise, the iPhone 7 is becomes an attractive option because of the perceived security benefits over Android and also brand appeal.

Apple has announced an iterative update to the iPhone. It gets a faster A10 fusion 4-core processor, a minor redesign of the main chassis which comes in a new colour called Jet Black, a bigger battery, water resistance, upgraded cameras and a new Force Touch fingerprint scanner. The larger iPhone 7 Plus get bolder updates to the rear camera in the form of a dual camera setup.

This iPhone also marks the end of the road for the 3.5mm headphone jack, which Apple has fully replaced with its lightning connector. Apple is also shipping lightning enabled headphones and also an adaptor which allows users of existing 3.5mm pin headphones to interface with the iPhone 7.
